Domain names explained.

Are you planning on marketing your business overseas? Is your market local, national or global? Answering these questions will help you decide on a suitable Top-Level Domain (TLD).

A Top-Level domain (TLD) is one of the domains at the highest level in the hierarchical Domain Name System of the Internet. As of June 2020, the root domain contains 1,584 top-level domains. The most common TLDs are .com, .org, .net, .gov, .biz and .edu. These common TLDs often have guidelines, but they are generally available to any registrant, anywhere in the world.

ccTLDs are Country Code TLDs and they represent specific geographic regions or countries, for example Barbados is .bb, Denmark is .dk and Australia is .au. Restrictions apply to registring .au, in general, registrants must be Australian and registration is overseen and regulated by the .au Domain Administration Ltd (auDA).

Your choice of TLD and/or ccTLD depends on the markets you wish to access and it will affect your Search Engine Optimistaion (SEO) as to wether you’re found on the first page of a Google Search or buried on page two or further!

In general, if you are doing business for profit in Australia, you would choose .com.au domain because you will rank higher in a Australian Google Searches and you gain the credibility that goes with the registration restriction of having a .au ccTLD.
